Overview
This event provides educational opportunities related to BPD, a chronic lung disease that follows ventilator and oxygen therapy for respiratory distress after preterm birth. Those infants who require ongoing invasive positive pressure support at 36 weeks postmenstrual age are classifi ed as having severe BPD.Strategies for the successful management of infants with severe BPD remain unclear and wide variations in practice exist both within and between centers. Controversies regarding many aspects of clinical care persist, including strategies of respiratory support; providing adequate respiratory support to allow optimal neurodevelopmental progress; assessments for reflux and aspiration; pharmacologic management of BPD; optimal status for discharge; and a host of other issues. Over the last several years with increasing experience and improved collaboration, the knowledge base for care of these infants has improved. This conference aims to share up to date information on best care practices for infants with BPD.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify symptoms of airway abnormalities and associated ventilator challenges and alter ventilator support based on this recognition
  2. Screen for hemodynamic compromise in sBPD
  3. Adjust ventilator support in infants with evolving sBPD to improve respiratory physiology.
  4. Provide optimal respiratory support to provide opportunity for growth and neurodevelopmental activity and avoid decreases in support prior to infant stability
  5. Provide expectant management to families of infants discharging on home ventilation and optimize care leading to discharge for safe and smooth transition to home
  6. Deliver compassionate care directed toward actual parent and family concerns
