Overview
Child maltreatment is a worldwide problem affecting nearly a million children each year in the United States, including approximately 1800 deaths annually. Undiagnosed child abuse leads to detrimental affects for children and families; therefore, timely recognition of child abuse is important in decreasing patient morbidity and mortality. This course uses 4 interactive cases to illustrate common issues in the evaluation of suspected child maltreatment and provides practical approaches that can be applied in any primary care or emergency department setting.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Perform appropriate medical evaluations for suspected abuse, to include: 1.) Obtaining an accurate history, 2.) Performing a comprehensive physical exam, 3.) Differentiating between accidental and non-accidental injury, 4.) Documenting your assessment accurately and comprehensively, 5.) Ordering the appropriate screening tests based on clinical presentation.
  2. Apply your role as a mandated reporter to identify and report cases of suspected child maltreatment to the appropriate agencies.
  3. Communicate effectively with investigative agencies in child maltreatment cases.
